BROADWAY Bowling Club's Andrew Walters and Steve Aldren won the County Pairs competition at Hewell on Sunday, beating Andy Wills and Simon Jones from Worcester BC in a closely fought game.
There was never more than a few shots in the game, but the Broadway pair found themselves four shots adrift at 17-13 after 17 ends after Wills played a stun shot to take Aldren's second wood out to hold three.
Broadway claimed one on the next two ends and then three superb woods from Walters saw Broadway claim a three on the 20th end to take a one-shot lead into the final end.
Aldren managed to draw the shot with his last wood but Wills was attacking the head, trying to take the shot wood out or move the jack to Jones' waiting woods.
He failed with his first two woods as Walters tried to cover any jack movement. Wills played with more weight with his third wood, only to take his own woods out and leave Broadway fours shots to the good.
However, the head was wide open and Walters tried to bowl the best back, only to narrowly drop in the ditch. Wills played weight again with his last wood but missed the target to leave Broadway champions.
Broadway men played two Concorde League games last week, defeating Evesham 101-79 on Thursday in winning by four rinks to one.
Walters was again the star of the show, leading his rink to a 31-8 victory over Keith Bridgewater. Captain Mick Aubrey won well against Jamie Curtis 22-16, whilst Dennis Hall got the better of Gary Hunt 20-16.
John Oliver finished strongly again to pip Frank Walker by two shots, whilst Nigel Gould was the sole winning rink for Evesham in beating Colin Cooper 23-10.
Rink scores: R Bryant, C Price, H Keyte, M Aubrey 22 - R Perry, J Turner, J Mansell, J Curtis 16; S Aldren, N Furminger, D Bartlett, A Walters 31 - W Lee, E Mitchell, J Sissons, K Bridgewater 8; P Smith, E Shorthouse, D Cresswell, D Hall 20 - S Brown, P Mason, M Webb. On Saturday Broadway went to Vines Park BC for another Concorde League game but, despite winning on three of the five rinks, they went down by six shots.
There were wins for Colin Cooper, John Oliver and Andrew Walter as they won collectively by 16 shots but a 22-shot deficit between Dennis Hall and Mick Aubrey saw Vines Park emerge victorious.
