THE STARTING gun has been fired and the race is now on to get nominations in for the Vale's sporting heroes.

The Wychavon Sports Recognition Awards honours some of the most talented performers, dedicated coaches and volunteers in sport but the finishing line to get nominations in closes on Friday, September 7.

Wychavon District Council wants to hear about any outstanding accomplishments or contributions from an individual, team or club over the past 12 months.

Nominations are being sought in 12 categories including senior male, senior female, junior male, junior female and disabled sports personalities of the year as well as the coach, young volunteer and volunteer of the year.

Awards will also be handed out for the junior team and club of the year along with an outstanding contribution award and contribution to physical activity award.

The winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Wednesday, September 19, and those chosen will then be in with a chance of a Worcestershire County Sports Partnership Award.

And new for this year - the outstanding contribution award is linked to the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year 'Unsung Hero' Award.

Mark Williams, sports development officer at Wychavon District Council, said: "Last year the nominations poured in from across the sporting spectrum so don't miss this chance to ensure your local sporting champion receives the recognition they deserve."

Nomination forms are available online at www.wychavon.gov.uk/sportawards. For more information or to request a form in the post contact Mark Williams on 01386 565229 or e-mail mark.williams@wychavon.gov.uk.
