LOCAL ex-serviceman Calvin Barnett completed the Evesham 10K race last Sunday carrying 52 kilos on his back - half of his own body weight.

He heroically completed the course to rapturous applause from the spectators who had stayed to see him finish some time after the 'serious' runners.

Calvin undertook the challenge in support of Help 4 Heroes and the Evesham Rugby Club U17 Tour Funds.

He is hoping to raise £500 for each cause and is well on the way there following the generous donations of spectators on the day.

Calvin was in the RAF for 26 years, retiring to a civilian support role four years ago. Since retiring he has been inspired by the Charity H4H and the relentless work they carry out to support our brave wounded service personnel.

He said: "Brian Parry and his team are nothing but inspirational in their efforts and this is what motivates myself and others.

"When you meet the people the money helps it's the most humbling experience you can have and makes you so proud to be British."

Calvin is also a proud parent of a junior player at Evesham Rugby Club. His son Callum currently plays for the U17s and Calvin has been so impressed by the commitment and inspiration the coaching team provide to motivate and educate the lads through their rugby that he was determined to help towards the cost of next year's tour, possibly to Antwerp in Belgium.

After a work accident last year, where he damaged his patella and knee cartilage which resulted in surgery, the Evesham 10k provided the inspiration he needed to aid his recovery.

Further donations would be gratefully accepted at www.justforgiving.com/itsnotheavyitsformybrothers. Special thanks to Birdseye Sports, Brett Woods Coal, OHL Stationary and Create Design & Print for their generous contributions to the challenge.
