Tough conditions on Men's Invitation Day

EVESHAM Golf Club held their annual Men's Invitation Day on Saturday when members invite friends from other clubs to join them in a better ball medal pairs competition, with the best score of the pair to count on each hole.

There was a good field for the competition in what turned out to be tough conditions for all, with strong winds and blustery showers.

Scoring reflected the sadly unseasonal and difficult weather conditions as the pair of Anthony Rock and Paul Oliver (Broadway GC) won with a nett 67.

Second place was taken by Bill Dobie and Martin Wilkinson (The Vale GC) with a nett 70, which beat Evesham captain Colin Cleary and Frank Meadows (Broadway GC) into third place on countback.

The best gross score of the day went to Lea Hawkes and Graham Hubbard (Boughton Park GC) with a superb 73.

As well as the main competition, prizes were also available for nearest the pin and longest drive (both members and guests).

The nearest the pin prizes went to Lea Hawkes (6th) and Brian Coleman (The Worcestershire GC, 16th), whilst longest drives were awarded to Frank Meadows (Broadway GC, 8th) and John Jones (14th).

Reflecting the difficult conditions, only two players made birdies on the par 3 holes, but this did mean they went home with 15 balls each, with the lucky boys being Jerry Cain and Anthony Perks (The Vale GC).

Looking ahead, Evesham Golf Club are holding their Men's Open on Saturday, August 4.

There are still a few spaces available and anyone interested in taking part can contact the club directly or get more details and entry forms from the website at www.eveshamgolfclub.co.uk.

Opens are an excellent way of seeing another course, testing your skills in unfamiliar settings and seeing what other local golf courses have to offer.
