IT WAS an afternoon full of celebration and reliving old memories when Pershore High School held its official 80th anniversary party.

Former pupils and other visitors joined existing staff and students at the Station Road school on Thursday (June 21) to mark the milestone and had the opportunity to share their memories of the school and were also given a tour round the building.

The school opened its doors for the first time in January 1932 when it was originally known as Pershore County Senior School and taught a total of 480 children.

The new school should have welcomed its first pupils in the previous September but problems with the building work meant it could not open until a term later. The opening saw 430 pupils first meet headmaster Mr Pardoe and his 13 teachers.

Now the school holds more than 1,500 pupils and during its 80-year history the Station Road school has seen just five headteachers at the helm.

Former headteacher Michael Krier was there on the day to celebrate the occasion and share his memories with current students and visitors.

To also mark the occasion headteacher Clive Corbett has written a book titled 'Pershore High School - A History of 80 Years' which is now available to buy.

Mr Corbett said: "It was a lovely afternoon and was great to see some of our former students and staff come in for a cup of tea and chat about the old times. It really was a memorable occasion.

"The actual anniversary goes back to January but we wanted to have an official celebration in the summer so there would be better weather and that would enable more people to come along.

"The book is doing great and we managed to sell lots of copies on the day. If anyone would like a copy of the book then please phone the school and we'll make sure one gets delivered to you."
