EXCITEMENT is building ahead of Evesham's first ever stand-up comedy festival which will see celebrity funnyman Jon Richardson headline the three-day event at the end of the month.

The Eight Out Of Ten Cats team captain will take to the Evesham Arts Centre stage on the festival's final day on Saturday June 30 when he performs his 'Funny Magnet' tour show at the Victoria Avenue venue in front of a sold-out crowd.

Richardson, who has also appeared on Channel Four's Alan Carr's Chatty Man and Stand Up For The Week, will be revelling in his trademark compulsions and pedantry which has seen the Lancaster born star become a popular television favourite.

The festival starts on Thursday, June 28 which will see half a dozen newer comedians raise the roof with laughter. Taking part are Dominic Elliott-Spencer, Billy Hill, Adam Henderson, Freddie Farrell, Ben Hutchinson, Frankie Peoples and master of ceremonies Richard Sandling.

Tickets for Thursday cost £5 on the door, £4 in advance and only £3 for students and groups of eight or more.

On Friday, June 29, BBC Radio One DJ and stand-up comedian Tom Deacon headlines the night and will be supported by Matt Richardson, who is regarded as one of the brightest young comedians currently about in the UK, Arts Centre favourite Chris Norton Walker and the night's MC Dan Wright.

Deacon, who has appeared in The Rob Brydon Show and Edinburgh and Beyond, is fast becoming a cult figure on the comedy circuit. Tickets to see the funny foursome are £10 at the door, £9 in advance and £8 for students and groups of eight or more.

Festival organiser Keith Norledge said the centre is packed with quality comedy talents throughout the year.

"Tickets to see Jon Richardson sold out weeks ago but seats for the other two nights of the festival are still available at the moment," he said.

"And the fun doesn't stop there with our Edinburgh Fringe preview shows in July include the very popular comedian Lucy Porter and there are even more top-notch acts booked for the autumn."

The festival and stand-up comedy shows at the Evesham Arts Centre have a recommended minimum age of 16.
