JAZZ fans are in for an evening treat next week when one of the world's most popular and finest bands performs in Tewkesbury.
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Band will take to The Roses Theatre stage on Sunday (May 20) at 5pm with a concert full of great music and sounds from the big band era.
The concert will also feature the harmonies of the Moonlight Serenaders, vocals from Catherine Sykes and Colin Anthony, and Ray Wordsworth with the swinging jazz band The Uptown Hall Gang. The evening will also feature a special tribute to the late Ted Heath and his orchestra.
Led by Ray McVay, a musician with over 50 years experience, The Glenn Miller Orchestra of 2012 is young and energetic, bringing the spirit of the big band era right into the 21st century.
Glenn Miller made musical history back in the 1930’s and 40’s when his military marching band caused a stir in dance halls across the States.
Upon gaining permission to bring his band to England in the summer of 1944, Glenn and his band immediately endeared themselves to the locals and subsequently played at 35 venues and on 40 radio broadcasts in the space of a few months.
Miller was tragically killed in December of the same year but his musical legacy lives on to this day and his music remains as popular now as it did nearly 70 years ago.
The concert allows people from a mix of generations to come together and celebrate some of the most popular big band music ever written - from those that remember Glenn Miller the first time around to those who have never experienced swing and jazz before.
Tickets cost £19 with a young adult age (16-25) charge of £9 and are available by calling the Roses Theatre Box Office on 01684 295074 or by visiting www.rosestheatre.org.
