Councillor urges traders to display flags

AN EVESHAM town councillor has urged traders to get behind the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations by displaying Union Jack flags outside their shop.

Diana Raphael, who is also chairman of the Evesham in Bloom committee, has written to more than 60 traders in the town asking them to put up the flags outside their shop or inside their front window but said she was disappointed after receiving a limited response so far.

Mrs Raphael has paid for the Union Jack flags and now wants to see them in all their glory in the town's High Street, Vine Street, Bridge Street and Port Street throughout the summer to mark the celebrations of The Queen's 60th anniversary on the throne.

"To be honest, I'm rather puzzled and stumped to why there has been a little response so far," she told the Observer. "I have bought the flags and they are ready to go but obviously to do this I need the permission from shop owners. Its not as if I'm asking them to pay for them.

"But it is difficult to organise things like this because you find for events like this people like to do their own thing to celebrate it.

"Showing the flags in the town's streets will create a special atmosphere and I think it is the least we can do to celebrate this wonderful event.

"We have done things like this before and they have made for real special occasions. It would be great to get as many people to participate as possible."
