Vale on flood alert after heavy rain

ENVIRONMENT Agency officials are closely monitoring the level of the River Avon in the Vale after a week of heavy rain caused it to burst its banks at the weekend.

More than an inch of rain fell yesterday (Sunday) which saw the river placed on flood alert but it is not expected to peak until Wednesday morning.

And with more heavy rain expected overnight and tomorrow (Tuesday) the river could rise even further towards the end of the week.

The flooding has only caused minor disruption in the usual areas including the closure of the Jubilee Bridge at Eckington and left Workman Gardens in Evesham under water.

The high winds which also battered the Vale yesterday caused more disruption bringing down trees and leaving some homes without power.

Evesham firefighters were called to Church Lench after a tree came down affecting electric cables just after 11am.
