A CHARITABLE pair are limbering up to take part in the London Marathon this weekend for two causes very close to their hearts.
Fiona Narburgh and Vanessa Hall, who work at Wychavon District Council, are both running for children affected by a serious illness and wanted to take on the challenge to raise funds to help.
Fiona, a senior manager at the council, used her creativity to raise £3,500 for her cause Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), by organising a work out day at Wychavon where staff could make donations to take part in Zumba classes and dress up in their sporty gear.
She also hosted an auction of promises at The Malvern Spa – which saw friends, relatives and the spa offering their time or goods in everything from freebies at The Malvern to two days of a carpenter’s time.
Fiona said: "Five years ago I nearly lost my son, Ellis, to type one diabetes.
"It was really scary, he’d been wrongly diagnosed with glandular fever, luckily he got the simple test that showed his blood sugar levels were off the scale just in time. He’s now a happy healthy teenager with his diabetes under control. I wanted to run for JDRF to say thanks as they really helped me and my family at that difficult time and are the only charity researching the life limiting condition and trying to find a cure for type 1 diabetes."
Vanessa, who works in revenues and benefits is running for Leukaemia Care and has already raised £2,000 for the cause. The reason she selected this charity is because her colleague's six-year-old son is receiving treatment for disease.
Vanessa said: "Elliott is a very brave little boy who is very poorly.
"He has just been nominated for a bravery award with Wyvern FM, and we thought it would be a good idea for me to run for the charity. I managed to secure a place for the Leukaemia Care and have baked cakes to sell to colleagues as well organising music events and raffles with prizes donated by local businesses."
