IT WAS a very busy Easter weekend for Evesham Golf Club’s men’s section as Good Friday saw the first staging of the exciting PowerPlay format.
The system uses two holes per green - one in an easier and one in a more difficult position - and a modified Stableford scoring system which rewards nett birdies or better when shooting for the harder pin position.
The event was greeted by a great turnout and everyone seemed to enjoy the challenge of deciding when best to use their three PowerPlay options.
Merv Nedic was in great form as he scored the day’s only eight-point hole with a birdie, nett eagle on the 14th hole, having chosen in advance to use a PowerPlay.
This helped Nedic to a grand total of 31 points, just edging out Oliver Knight with 30 points. New member Laurie Keen scored an impressive 28 points, ahead of long-time leader Ian Facer with 27 points, and in fifth place was Oliver Farrell with an excellent 26 points playing off a handicap of Scratch.
This event was used as a forerunner for what is believed to be the county’s first PowerPlay Open to be held at Evesham Golf Club on Saturday, May 26, so be quick to get your applications in as a large entry from other clubs is expected.
Nedic is proving to be the man to beat at the moment as he also romped to victory in the Saturday Stableford with a tremendous score of 43 points, which gave him victory by four points over Fraser Williamson, whose score of 39 points was matched by Trevor Woodward. Williamson took second spot by virtue of a better back nine.
Finally, after numerous matches over the winter period, Sunday saw the final of the Winter League with favourites Steve Wood and Pete Stanley up against the experienced duo of Stuart Ridley and Roger Smith.
It was a close contest which went to the 18th green when Wood’s putt just lipped out to leave Ridley and Smith the overall winners.
Congratulations to them both on a great win and commiserations to James Attwood and Pete Moore who took this year’s wooden spoon.
