A MAN was punched in the head and robbed in Evesham town centre at the weekend.

The victim, who was in his 20s, was sat down on Bridge Street about 3.30am on Saturday (March 24) when he was surrounded by a group of youths.

One of them then hit him in the head took £80 in cash from his wallet and punched him again before the group moved on.

Later that morning police arrested and bailed a 17-year-old on suspicion of robbery.

PC Paul Blundell of Evesham Police Station who is investigating the incident said: "The robbery was unprovoked and the person who attacked the victim and took his money was cowardly, only doing so with a large group behind him.

"I would like to speak to anyone who may have been in Bridge Street between 3.30am and 4am and either saw this assault and robbery take place or a large group of youths making their way along Bridge Street and onto Port Street."

PC Blundell can be contacted via the non-emergency police number 101 or information can be passed on anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
