A TEAM of fund-raisers are set to get a heroes welcome when they return from a gruelling cycle across Europe this weekend.

The eleven members of Evesham Rugby Club set off from Rome a fortnight ago and are set to cross the finish line at the clubhouse on Sunday (April 15) having pedalled 1,400 miles.

The group are set to arrive back on home soil in Portsmouth tomorrow (Saturday) and then make their way to Culham, a small village just south of Abingdon, before returning to Evesham the following day for a huge homecoming party starting at 2pm.

During their journey the team learned they had smashed their £20,000 target with all proceeds going to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The money is to pay for new neurological equipment and a way of saying thanks to staff who battled to save their teammate Matt Brace who died from a head injury last year at the age of just 25 after a fall at a club social event.

Charlie Homer, who helped organise the cycle, said he was looking forward to getting back.

"We are counting down the days and really looking forward to seeing everyone at the homecoming party on Sunday at the Rugby Club," he said.

"The support from home has been immense and kept us focused."

Anyone is welcome to attend the party on Sunday from 2pm.
