MORE than 120 people took part in the annual Good Friday Procession of Witness in Evesham town centre.

Beginning at the bottom of Bridge Street, the procession made its way through Market Place to Abbey Park with stops along the way for readings and hymns.

A huge wooden cross was carried throughout the event which was led by vicar of Evesham, Rev Andrew Spurr, who is also the chairman of Churches Together.

All of Evesham’s Christian churches were represented, including the Vale Christian Centre, Elim Christian Centre, Salvation Army, Evesham Baptist Church, Evesham Methodist Church, the six Anglican churches, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Society of Friends.

Rev Spurr said: "Over the centuries, the cross has come to represent crusade, feudal power and it has even been painted on fighter planes for war.

"These days it’s been good to shed these bad associations so that it can again be a symbol for downtrodden people, just as it was in the time of the Roman Empire.

"Holy Week has a different feel to Christmas, which attracts many people each winter.

"Holy Week is a time for remembering what it means to stand against powerful organisations which demean people, and ways of distributing wealth which are unjust, 2,000 years ago it was the primary way that the might of the Roman Empire was enforced."
