Thumping home win for inspired United

By Liam Moakes 24/01 Updated: 25/01 20:00

A SECOND half goal blitz clinched a second successive Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division victory for Evesham United as they crushed visitors Weymouth 4-0 on Sunday.

Recent recruit Ben Pugh took his goal tally to three in two games as the Robins defeated the Terras for the first ever time and moved themselves three places and five points above the relegation zone in the process.

There was no sign of the second half avalanche of goals to come from the hosts in a tight first half which saw Weymouth match Evesham, only for United to take a 41st minute lead when the visiting defence failed to clear Neil MacKenzie's free kick and Pugh pounced to put Matt Clarke's side ahead.

Terras keeper Nick Jordan saved well at the foot of his post from James McPike before Evesham doubled their lead on 64 minutes when a ball over the top allowed Pugh a clear run on goal and the ex-Nuneaton Town striker coolly slotted home under the advancing Jordan.

It got worse for Weymouth seven minutes later when Jack Winter got to the byline before finding McPike at the near post who guided the ball home past Jordan.

With the Weymouth defence all at sea, Evesham pressed for a fourth and it arrived five minutes later when Winter again provided the cross which was this time converted by top scorer Marcus Palmer for his 12th goal of the season.

The hosts were determined to further boost their goal difference and twice more before the final whistle Palmer got into scoring positions, only to fail to find the target with just Jordan to beat.

Evesham are back in action at St George's Lane tomorrow when they play host to bottom placed Swindon Supermarine.
