A STUDENT's insect-friendly garden design has been rated a blooming success after judges selected it to represent Pershore College for a prestigious flower show.

Josh Egan-Wyer was one of six students from the college to enter the annual competition which sees the winning design built and showcased at the Malvern Spring Show which this year takes place between Thursday, May 10 and Sunday, May 13 at the Three Counties Showground.

Every year BSc and HND Horticulture students at Pershore College are asked to submit their garden designs for the prestigious show with a different theme tasked each year.

This year students were given an 'insect-friendly' theme and had to include elements such as seating, bug hotels, vibrant colours, pollinating flowers, water and at least two entrances into the garden.

Josh, who is studying a BSc in Horticulture, used a tree as a focal point for his garden, supported by four planting areas containing herbaceous plants, herbs, grasses and annuals which are all beneficial to pollinating insects.

It also features a special 'wine rope' which is a rope covered in wine and sugar to attract adult moths and other insects.

The 20-year-old said he was thrilled to have won and was looking forward to starting to turning his designs into the real thing.

"I'm really pleased that my design got picked and I can't wait to build it with the rest of my group," he said.

The judges hope Josh's design will bring similar success for the college after their past two entries for the event won a coveted gold medal.

Tony Davy, one of the judges and a garden design tutor at the college, said: "Josh's design was chosen from strong competition. The judges thought it was both eye-catching and educational.

"We have high hopes that Josh's garden will continue Pershore's successful run at Malvern."
